Winter Solstice Sound Bath

The Quiet Riot is both a Winter Solstice sound bath celebration of the journey from darkness to light, and the name of an experimental music project by Thomas Klepach.

The blessing of the darkest day is that it marks the beginning of the journey towards the light. The last moment of daylight on the solstice is at 4:19 pm and the first moment of darkness is at 4:20 — this is when the sound bath begins.

The music will be a meditative mix of instruments native to the School Street Yoga studio, such as the harmonium, the giant crystal singing bowls, the hang, or handpan, as well as other instruments including the standard Boehm flute, a cedar Potawatomi flute, the Chinese hulusi gourd flute, the Mbira thumb piano, and the bowed banjo. Sounds will be captured and layered with a looping pedal through a sound system, leading to a complex and shifting soundscape covering a wide dynamic range that will immerse the listeners in a sonic realm that celebrates creative destruction and constructive rebirth. Not for the sonically timid, this event will be an attempt at aural transcendence through drone, gently shifting repetition, and sonic release.

Doors open at 4pm. $10 for I 💚 yoga members and $15 w/out membership. Space is limited, so please pre-register.
